WorldBeat offers students workshops designed to raise awareness of important Global Issues. Workshops are also available for Teacher Professional Development sessions. All workshops are offered free of charge. Workshops currently available include: Eliminating Chronic Poverty and Hunger—Globally, a child dies approximately every three seconds. Much of time, poor nutrition and unsafe drinking water are to blame. Some people say there’s not enough food to go around. Is that so? Access to Universal Primary Education—Everyonehas to go to school, right? WRONG! Globally, more than 100 million children remain out of school and 46% of girls in the world’s poorest countries have no access to primary education. Promoting Gender Equity and Equality of Women—Poverty has a woman’s face. Global prosperity and peace will only be achieved when all people are treated equally. Women work 2/3 of the world’s working hours, produce half the world’s food, and yet earn only 10%of the world’s income, and own less than 1% of the world’s property (World Development Indicators, 1997). Reducing Child Mortality and Improving Maternal Health—Why are thosemost vulnerable the ones who suffer the most? Globally, nearly 11 million children under the age of five die annually and more than half a million women die in pregnancy and childbirth every year. Combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and other Diseases—Malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS are the major health challenges facing people in the developing world. These three diseases together claim more than 8000 lives each day. Ensuring Environmental Sustainability—Environmental sustainability is a part of global economic and social well being. In the world today, more than 2.5 billion people do not have access to improved sanitation and more than 1.2 billion have no access to a safe source of water.
